P S Creation's Handmade Ready Rangoli My Order

Made by hand in Pune

Every piece starts as an empty sheet.

Gauri Aali Sonpavlani — Double

P S Creation’s is Pooja S. Mulay’s workshop, run out of her home in Pune. Around ten years ago she started laying rangoli the way everyone does — freehand on the floor, early in the morning before a festival, knowing it would be swept away by evening.

The pieces she makes now began as an answer to that. A base is cut to the shape of the design — a doorway border, a pair of Lakshmi footprints, a Gauri banner. Then the rangoli powder goes down by hand, colour by colour, packed into the shape until the whole thing holds together. A small motif takes an afternoon. A large Gauri banner can take two or three days.

Nothing is printed and nothing is mass-produced. If you order two of the same design, they are laid twice.

Why it lasts

Because the powder sits on a cut base rather than loose on the floor, a finished piece can be lifted, carried and stored flat. Customers bring the same banner out for Gauri every year. That is the whole point of it — the look of a hand-laid rangoli, without losing it the same evening.
